Florida to Build Expressway with Wireless EV Charging, Solar Panels, and Multi-Use Trail

CENTRAL FLORIDA — Officials are planning the State Road 516 Lake/Orange Expressway, a 4.4-mile highway designed to connect two counties while testing wireless electric vehicle (EV) charging technology.

Construction has already begun on parts of the expressway, but a 1.6-mile segment with EV charging capability will start in 2026. This pilot segment will feature a 3/4-mile wireless charging lane for specially equipped vehicles used in initial testing.

The entire project is expected to cost $546 million and continue through 2029.

Additional features of the expressway include:

  • Solar panels to power road lights and toll equipment

  • Wildlife protection measures

  • A multi-use trail for pedestrians and cyclists

Officials say the project aims to meet the future travel needs of the area, which has grown into a major residential, commercial, and medical hub.
