South Texas Under Freeze Warning as Cold Snap Hits Wednesday Morning

A dramatic overnight temperature drop is forecast in south-central Texas, putting crops, fragile plants, and unprotected pipes at risk as freezing conditions form before daylight Wednesday.

According to the National Weather Service in Austin/San Antonio, Medina, Frio, Atascosa, Wilson, and Karnes counties will be under a Freeze Warning from 3 a.m. to 8 a.m. on Wednesday. Overnight temperatures are predicted to drop to roughly 30 degrees, chilly enough to inflict frost and freeze damage in exposed regions.

Pre-dawn hours, when temperatures often drop, make communities such as Hondo, Pearsall, Pleasanton, Floresville, and Karnes City particularly vulnerable. Rural and low-lying locations may see the longest periods of freezing, posing a greater hazard to winter crops, citrus, and early spring plantings. Failure to take proper safeguards could potentially lead to damage to unprotected outside pipelines and irrigation systems.

Residents are encouraged to cover sensitive plants, bring potted greenery indoors, and wrap any exposed plumbing. Pet owners should also make sure their animals have access to appropriate warmth overnight.

Temperatures are forecast to increase fast after sunrise Wednesday, with the freeze threat lifted by mid-morning. While no new freeze warnings are presently in effect, experts advise being vigilant for more cold weather headlines if clear skies and calm winds linger later this week.
