Orlando residents and visitors should be prepared for a variety of weather situations as the New Year approaches. The National Weather Service has issued a Dense Fog Advisory for East Central Florida until 10 a.m. EST. Forecasters predict the fog to clear by mid-late morning, but vision decreases of one mile or less can pose serious risks, especially on the road.
In addition to the fog, beachgoers are strongly advised not to enter the surf since there is a HIGH chance of deadly rip currents at all central Florida Atlantic beaches. The persistent ENE long-period swells contribute to the numerous, powerful, life-threatening currents predicted for today. A strong cold front approaching tonight into Tuesday is also predicted to bring a drop in temperatures, resulting in a chilly start to the New Year. Temperatures, which began in the 50s, are expected to fall much further on Tuesday, with some locations even reaching the upper 30s.
Boating conditions will also become more difficult later today as a strong cold front approaches. Mariners should be informed that a Small Craft Advisory will go into place this evening, expanding to include all local waters by Tuesday morning. The west to northwest winds will strengthen alongside the front, and seas, which are currently at 2-4 ft, are expected to rise to 4-6 ft near shore and 5-8 ft offshore by early Tuesday morning. Post-frontal conditions will gradually improve from mid to late week, with winds and seas expected to decrease.
From Tuesday to Friday, residents on land may experience increased fire sensitivity due to the considerable drop in humidity following the front. Residents should be alert to local fire alerts and advisories during this time. As the week passes, frigid temperatures are expected to last until Wednesday, with a moderate warming trend beginning by Friday.
