Weather Alert: Light Snow Creates Travel Delays Across Iowa and Illinois Late Wednesday

Drivers in eastern Iowa and western Illinois may see modest travel delays late Wednesday when a weak cyclone brings light snow to end 2025, followed by a chilly start to the New Year.

According to the National Weather Service in the Quad Cities, light snow is predicted to fall Wednesday morning and continue into the afternoon, with accumulations reaching one inch. While snowfall levels remain restricted, even little accumulations can cause slick areas on untreated roads, particularly during periods of low visibility.

Snow will fall across much of the Quad Cities region, including Davenport, Bettendorf, Moline, Rock Island, and the adjacent rural roadways. Officials emphasize that the system lacks considerable moisture, although brief bursts of snow could still cause traffic delays during peak commute hours. Motorists planning to travel late Wednesday should allow extra time and keep an eye on road conditions.

By midnight on New Year’s Eve, colder air will have settled behind the system. Wind chills of 0 to 10 degrees above zero are forecast north of Interstate 80, adding another layer of caution for anyone spending extended time outside.

Drier weather is likely to begin in 2026, though chilly temperatures will persist. There are no winter advisories in effect for now, but officials are keeping an eye on the weather in case travel impacts develop late Wednesday.
