NY Weather Alert: Dangerous Lake-Effect Snow Expected Through Friday

A significant lake-effect snow band is predicted to form later Thursday evening across central New York, bringing the possibility of heavy snowfall rates and hazardous travel conditions into Friday night.

According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, a west-to-east oriented lake-effect snow band will form east of Lake Ontario around 5 p.m. Thursday, affecting northern Oneida County first and then migrating south.

A Lake Effect Snow Warning has been issued for northern Onondaga and Oneida counties, with heavy accumulations expected until 7 a.m. Saturday. Snowfall rates may approach 1 to 2 inches per hour, particularly overnight tonight and Friday afternoon.

Forecast snow totals through Saturday morning show the largest amounts—12 to 24 inches—possible in northeastern Oneida County, including Camden, Florence, and Brewerton. Northern Onondaga County, including villages north of Syracuse, could receive 8 to 18 inches, with severe cutoffs just south of the main band.

Forecasters warn that because lake-effect bands are thin, snowfall levels might vary greatly over short distances. It is unclear how far south the band will shift on Friday, but it may approach the New York State Thruway corridor at some points.

The most significant snowfall is forecast overnight tonight and Friday afternoon, before the band moves north and fades early Saturday morning.

Drivers are advised to avoid unnecessary driving during peak snowfall periods, as visibility may deteriorate quickly and roadways may become snow-covered in minutes.

Residents should pay close attention to National Weather Service updates, as even adjustments in wind direction can significantly alter snowfall totals.
