The incident occurred aboard the Nieuw Statendam, about 40 miles northeast of Sabana, Cuba.

Search efforts by air and sea covered 690 square miles over roughly eight hours before being suspended.
The cruise had departed Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale on Dec. 27 for a New Year-themed voyage, with a planned stop in Key West on Jan. 2 before returning to port.
