Single mother dies after intoxicated driver with prior DUI strikes her on e-bike; man arrested

Florida – A 38-year-old single mother, K. Strang, lost her life in Florida after a speeding vehicle struck her while she was riding her e-bike. The driver, 22-year-old X. Rigby, who has a long history of reckless driving, was heavily intoxicated at the time of the crash. Authorities say Rigby fled the scene without calling for help and now faces multiple felony charges.

Rigby is charged with DUI manslaughter, vehicular homicide, and leaving the scene of a crash involving death. Court records show a troubling pattern: he was arrested for DUI in 2023 after admitting to mixing alcohol and marijuana but had the charge reduced to reckless driving in 2024. In 2022, he was also involved in a hit-and-run.

During his first court appearance, Judge E. Zuroweste emphasized his history. “Here you are with a prior leaving the scene from 2022, then in 2024, the state was generous enough to reduce your DUI to a reckless, for purposes of bond, it’s a DUI. So, then, here we are now,” she said.

She condemned the facts of the current case: “We’ve now gone to a second DUI, but this time the extremely aggravating facts where you’ve killed somebody, left the scene and dragged their body.” Rigby was denied bond on two charges, and the judge set a $750,000 bond for the DUI manslaughter charge.

She concluded: “I’m finding that you’re a danger to the community and that nothing else can secure your decision making and putting your life and everyone else’s life on the road.”

The crash occurred at about 10:08 p.m. Saturday. Investigators report Strang was riding her e-bike southbound in the curb lane when Rigby slammed into her from behind. The impact threw her onto the hood and windshield. Rigby continued driving for eight blocks with her body on the car before it fell off. He never called for help and disappeared.

First responders found Strang dead at the scene. Investigators from the Major Accident Investigation Team quickly traced Rigby to a nearby liquor store about a mile away. He showed signs of intoxication, including slurred speech, unsteady movement, and the smell of alcohol. Rigby refused field sobriety tests and was arrested on the spot.

Friends and neighbors described Strang as loving and selfless. A GoFundMe in her memory called her an “angel” and one of the most caring souls in the community. On social media, she shared her devotion to her child, writing: “I’ll love you forever. I’ll like you for always. As long as I’m living my baby you’ll be loved.”

Strang’s sudden death leaves a child without a mother and a community in shock. Many are questioning why Rigby was allowed behind the wheel again. Authorities say the investigation continues, but the facts already show a grim reality—a man repeatedly given another chance has now caused an irreversible tragedy.
