The New York State Department of Transportation is warning drivers to be cautious because slippery roads and freezing rain may soon become a danger throughout the state.
Recent weather has accumulated ice and frozen conditions, which can cause slick roadways, power outages, and darkened traffic signals at junctions.
Motorists are advised that if they see a dark traffic signal, they should regard the intersection as an all-way stop, yield to the vehicle on their right, use turn signals, and keep an eye out for pedestrians and other cars. Officials highlight that following these guidelines is critical for avoiding mishaps.
The DOT says their crews are ready to restore traffic signals as soon as possible if an outage occurs, but officials warn driver prudence is still the most critical factor in remaining safe. Drivers should slow their speed, give extra stopping distance, and be cautious of ice on bridges, overpasses, and shaded places, which can be particularly hazardous.
The Department recommends all motorists to check road conditions, plan ahead of time, and be cautious when traveling in potentially icy regions. “Slow down, stay alert, and put safety first,” the DOT advised.
