CHICAGO – A 17-year-old girl who was shot during a fight outside a Jewel-Osco in Chicago’s South Loop has been identified as a homeless teen missing from Minnesota since January.
The shooting occurred late Tuesday night outside the store on the 1200 block of South Wabash Avenue. CBS News Chicago viewer Josiah Henderson captured video showing the teen on a stretcher being taken to an ambulance in serious condition.
“I first heard two shots go off, and then I seen some people running,” Henderson said. “I walk over there, and I see a girl laying down, and like, it’s like blood by her leg.”
Police sources confirmed the teen was shot in her upper right thigh and was treated at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension verified she had been reported missing from the Minneapolis area, and the missing person alert has been canceled.
Authorities said the shooting involved a Jewel-Osco security guard. Sources say the teen and the guard got into a verbal altercation; during the argument, the teen poured water on the guard, who then pulled out a handgun and shot her.
The security guard drove away after the shooting but was later arrested on the 8100 block of South Saginaw Avenue. Detectives recovered several pieces of evidence from the guard’s vehicle, including a possible firearm used in the incident.
Jewel-Osco has not responded to questions regarding whether the security guard was authorized to carry a gun, the company’s use-of-force policy, or the previous 2024 incident involving a security guard firing a gun at the same location. The company website does not indicate that store security or lot guards are permitted to be armed.
