The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued an urgent warning about certain kitchen tools that could release harmful chemicals, including lead, into food.
FDA investigators tested cookware sold at retail locations across the U.S. and identified four products containing lead, a toxic metal that makes food unsafe for consumption. The affected items, made by Tiger White, Silver Horse, and JK Vallabhdas, are aluminum cookware manufactured in India. They include one milk pan and three circular, flat-bottomed pans, found at stores in New York (Mannan Supermarket) and Illinois (Patel Brothers and Indiacos). Distribution beyond these stores is currently unclear.
Consumers are advised to check their homes for these products and dispose of any utensils that may contain lead. Retailers and distributors are urged to consult the FDA regarding the safety and regulatory status of these items.
Prolonged exposure to lead has been linked to learning disabilities, autism spectrum disorder, cancer, kidney disease, birth defects, cardiovascular dysfunction, and neurological damage. Even low levels of lead exposure can be harmful, particularly for children and infants, who are more vulnerable due to smaller body size, metabolism, and rapid growth. Children may experience learning difficulties, low IQ, and behavior changes, while high exposure can cause abdominal pain, vomiting, lethargy, irritability, seizures, and coma. Adults exposed to lead may face high blood pressure, kidney damage, reduced fertility, increased cancer risk, and neurological issues.
The FDA has banned the use of lead in products that come into contact with food, including cookware. Starting January 2026, Washington state will prohibit the sale and manufacture of metal cookware containing more than five parts per million of lead.
Consumers are urged to stay vigilant and avoid using any kitchen items that could pose a risk of lead contamination.
