Michigan Weather Alert: 45 MPH Winds Hit Detroit As Snow Chances Rise This Weekend

Loose branches sway and trash cans rattle as strong southwest winds blow across southeast Michigan this morning. The weather feels abnormally mild for January, but winter is already planning its next move in Detroit.

The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory until late afternoon. Wind gusts of 40 to 45 mph are forecast when a cold front passes through. High-profile automobiles may suffer on exposed roads, particularly those along Interstates 94, 75, and 96. Unsecured outdoor items may be blown around, and localized power outages are possible.

Rain falls throughout the morning, mixed with strong winds that can reduce visibility at times. A brief heavy downpour cannot be ruled out, although major thunderstorms are unlikely. Temperatures peak in the upper 50s early, then gradually decline behind the front.

Conditions will calm temporarily tonight as winds subside and temperatures fall near freezing. Saturday gets colder and cloudier. Rain and snow may mix by afternoon, particularly north and west of the city. Little accumulation is forecast during the day, but it prepares for a wintry weekend.

Saturday night and Sunday deliver the most noticeable winter signal. Snow showers may form, resulting in a couple inches of snowfall in sections of southeast Michigan. While totals are uncertain, even light snow could cause sloppy roads and impaired visibility, particularly during early travel hours.

Sunday remains cold, with highs in the low 30s. Any melting during the day could immediately refreeze after sunset, raising the risk of black ice on bridges and unprotected surfaces.

Meteorologists continue to monitor the system as colder air deepens across the Great Lakes.

Secure any loose items today. Exercise caution in strong winds. Prepare for winter driving conditions to return this weekend.
