SCOTIA — A Rensselaer County man allegedly drove drunk at 110 miles per hour in a 30-mile-per-hour zone before crashing his car early Friday morning, police said. The driver had to be extricated from the overturned vehicle and is now in the hospital.
Police charged the 26-year-old man with driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, and speeding. Authorities said the investigation is ongoing, and additional charges related to the high-speed chase and crash are expected.
According to police, shortly before 5 a.m., a village patrol officer spotted a 2023 Mercedes-Benz traveling at 110 miles per hour along Cuthbert Street, heading straight toward the officer’s cruiser. The officer took evasive action to avoid a head-on collision.
The car continued speeding toward the dead end of Cuthbert Street near North Ballston Avenue. It went airborne over an embankment, struck a guardrail, flew across four traffic lanes, and landed upside down in a grassy area on the opposite side of North Ballston Avenue.
Police had to break one of the car’s windows to rescue the trapped driver. He received treatment at the scene before being transported to Albany Medical Center Hospital.
