Man Found Dead on Rehoboth Property Where Missing Teen’s Body Was Buried

A man was found dead and a woman unresponsive on the same 20-acre Rehoboth property where 18-year-old Kylee Monteiro was discovered dead last month.

The unnamed man and woman were found just before 7 a.m. on Friday, according to the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office. Both were unresponsive inside a work-style van parked on the property at 107 County St., which appeared to be their living space.

Officials pronounced the man dead at the scene. The woman was first taken to Morton Hospital and later transferred to a Boston hospital for further treatment.

Authorities said the situation does not appear suspicious at this time, and they are withholding identities until family notifications are complete.

The property is the same location where Kylee Monteiro was found dead on Aug. 19, after she had been missing since the beginning of the month. Monteiro’s boyfriend, Gregory Groom, has been charged in connection with her disappearance and killing and has been held without bail since.

During a brief arraignment, Groom stared straight ahead as Assistant Bristol District Attorney Jason Mohan laid out the evidence against him.

Groom reported Monteiro missing on Aug. 8, a day after prosecutors say he killed her and buried her body on the property. Monteiro, who was active on social media, had not posted or communicated with anyone since Aug. 7.

Monteiro had been staying at a shelter in Pembroke but left on Aug. 6. A rideshare brought her to Groom’s house at 107 County St.

Kylee Monteiro’s Case

Groom lived on the sprawling property with his brother and grandparents. Police say Monteiro told Groom she was 11 weeks pregnant and that he was the father. He told authorities he began saving money for a place for them to live but initially did not believe her until she showed medical paperwork.

Police say the pair argued on Aug. 6. Monteiro told her sister, Faith, that Groom threw her to the ground, pulled her hair, and strangled her. She texted her sister, “My phone’s at 4%. If I die, it was Greg.”

On Aug. 19, Groom and Faith Monteiro went to the police station for an interview. Authorities say Groom admitted to pushing Kylee into a door in a shed, causing her to hit her head. He denied pulling her hair or strangling her after police showed him the text message.

Police say Groom admitted he knocked Monteiro’s phone from her hand as she tried to send a voice message. He then confessed to killing her after police told him they had obtained a search warrant for the property.

Groom drew a rudimentary map for police and admitted he and Monteiro argued behind the shed. During the argument, police say he stabbed her twice in the neck and once in the chest, breaking the knife blade in the process.

Groom reportedly spent several hours digging a hole in the woods roughly 20 yards from the shed and pushed her body into it at sunrise.

During the Aug. 19 search of the property, police found a large pile of brush near the shed covering the murder site, along with blood and other physical evidence. About 20 yards away, officers found another pile of cut-down trees covering a rectangular hole with recently disturbed dirt. Monteiro’s body was found about five feet into that hole.

Elliot Levine, the defense lawyer appointed for Groom, did not contest the prosecution’s request to hold Groom without bail. Both Groom and Monteiro’s families attended the arraignment but did not speak to the media. A person leaving with Monteiro’s family said only, “We’re devastated.”
