A Mississippi woman and her 3-year-old daughter were found dead in Alabama days after being reported missing.
Shardee McGill, 32, and her daughter Janae were reported missing on Sept. 22 by their husband and father, Johnathan McGill. The pair had left their northeast Jackson home on Sunday night in Shardee’s Chevrolet Equinox and never returned. They were later entered into the National Crime Information Center database as missing persons.
Their vehicle was recovered in Epes, Alabama, about 130 miles from Jackson, on Tuesday, according to Hinds County Sheriff and Interim Jackson Police Chief Tyree Jones.
“This young lady left the residence with her mother,” Jones said. “It wasn’t a situation where there was a kidnapping or a custodial kidnapping.” He added that the case did not qualify for an Amber Alert, though alerts were sent to media and via social media.
Multiple agencies, including the FBI, searched for Shardee and Janae in Epes. Shardee’s body was discovered Thursday in a shallow body of water off the Tombigbee River, Sumter County Coroner Sonya Jemison confirmed. Janae’s body was found Friday near the same location. The missing person alert for Janae was canceled following the discovery.
Johnathan McGill was detained for questioning after traveling to Alabama but was later released.
Authorities are treating both deaths as “suspicious,” and causes of death have not yet been released. Sheriff Jones said it is too early to identify any suspects or determine who may be involved in the case.
