Veteran NY State Trooper Killed in Hudson Valley Motorcycle Crash

A longtime New York State Police sergeant died Tuesday, Sept. 16, in a motorcycle crash on the Taconic State Parkway in East Fishkill, Dutchess County, authorities said.

According to State Police, Sgt. Nigel K. Barnett, 49, of Poughkeepsie, lost control of his motorcycle while riding south around 6:30 a.m. He was thrown from the bike and struck the guardrail on the parkway’s west shoulder. Barnett, who was on his way to work, died at the scene.

Barnett was a 19-year veteran of the New York State Police and most recently served as station commander of the Cortlandt station in Westchester County.

State Police praised Barnett for serving “with dedication and distinction” and said his leadership and steady presence will be deeply missed by colleagues and the communities he served.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to Sergeant Barnett’s family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time,” the agency posted on social media. “Please keep them in your thoughts as we honor his service and sacrifice.”
