MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — A Miami-Dade man is facing charges after allegedly physically abusing his daughter for refusing to attend church, prompting discussions about family violence linked to religious practices.
Authorities say 63-year-old Renel Sanon entered his daughter’s bedroom, yanked the covers from her bed, punched her in the chest, and struck her with an electrical cord. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue was already providing care to the victim when deputies arrived. The girl did not give a statement at the scene.
Members of a specialized Mental Health Outreach and Victim Empowerment Squad documented the victim’s injuries, and the Department of Children and Families (DCF) was notified. Sanon was arrested at his home at 10:55 a.m. and booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.
Sanon, described as 5′6″, 175 lbs., with brown eyes and mixed hair, is charged with child abuse without great bodily harm. His bond was set at $2,500, and Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Zachary James will preside over the case.
Detectives continue to investigate and are urging anyone with additional information to contact Miami-Dade County Crime Stoppers at 305-471-8477. Tips can be submitted anonymously.
