Scott County Hunting Dog Found Safe After Community Search

BUFFALO, Ill. — A lost hunting dog in Scott County was safely reunited with its owner after neighbors, friends, and even strangers joined a massive search over the weekend.

Eric Gaines was hunting with his dog, Waylon, when the dog chased after a wounded goose into the middle of the Mississippi River. “We had two boats coming down the river, and the wake pushed him under the water. I didn’t see him after that,” Gaines said. Initially fearing the worst, Gaines and his fiancée, Madison Krause, began searching the area.

Krause turned to Facebook for help, and the response was overwhelming. “Sunday night my phone started blowing up,” she said. “People from work reached out, and their husbands who hunted said they’d help with drones the next morning.”

A friend, Tom Davis, provided a boat to assist in the river search. Eventually, calling out for Waylon, they heard the dog’s cries in response. Waylon was found Monday, safe and unharmed.

“More than anything, we’re just grateful that we got Waylon back,” Krause said. The search highlighted the power of community teamwork and determination in rescuing a beloved pet.
