During a Monday morning press conference, Lincoln Police shared new details about the murder-suicide that occurred Friday in the Near South neighborhood. The victims have been identified as 51-year-old Sterling Jordan and 51-year-old Jennifer McCarther.
Police Chief Michon Morrow said officers were called to a home near South 14th and Sumner Streets around 10:45 a.m. for a welfare check. “When they entered, they found both Sterling Jordan and Jennifer McCarther deceased on the bedroom floor,” Morrow stated.
According to Morrow, McCarther suffered multiple gunshot wounds, while Jordan had a single gunshot wound to the head. “It is heartbreaking and infuriating to know that her life was stolen by such a senseless act of violence,” she said. “The pain her family now has to carry is both unimaginable and absolutely unacceptable.”
Morrow explained that officers had first visited the home around 4:00 p.m. Thursday for a welfare check after Jordan failed to show up for work. Since there was no immediate sign of danger, officers did not enter the house at that time.
When police returned Friday morning for another welfare check, they went inside and discovered the bodies.
Police also released a statement and photo from McCarther’s daughter, who described her mother as “a beautiful soul, a mother of three, a daughter, a sister to seven, and a grandmother of five.” The statement added, “She’ll never get the chance to see them grow up. Losing her has left a hole in our hearts that will never be filled, but her love and light live on through all of us who were blessed to know her.”
Her daughter said she shared her mother’s story to honor her memory and raise awareness about domestic violence. “If her story can help even one woman find the strength to leave before it’s too late, then her memory will continue to protect and inspire others,” she said.
McCarther is the third woman in Lincoln this year to die in a murder-suicide.
