INDIANAPOLIS — Starting Oct. 1, Hoosiers can apply for financial help to heat their homes through the winter via the Indy Energy Assistance Program (EAP).
“The energy assistance program is critical because we are dealing with our most vulnerable populations,” said Carla James, director of basic needs with the John H. Boner Neighborhood Centers. “When the temperatures drop, people really need to maintain their utility services and we know during the winter time, bills go up, so this is a program to help people maintain that safe, warm heating environment for their families.”
Each year, nearly 30,000 people in Marion County apply for energy assistance. Eligibility is determined by household income and size. Applicants must provide proof of income for the last 90 days and recent utility bills.
“It is a pretty straightforward process. There may be some additional documents needed depending on your household situation,” James said.
Applicants should apply early, as processing can take up to 55 days or longer due to high demand at the start of the season.
While Indy EAP serves only Marion County residents, other energy assistance programs are available across Indiana.
This Saturday, Citizens Energy Group will host a Community Resource Day to provide free help with applications. Both digital and paper applications are available, with paper forms available at the John Boner Neighborhood Centers in Indianapolis.
