An Arizona man, Derek Swanson, tragically died from a brain injury caused by anesthesia complications during a dental implant procedure, with his family recently reaching a legal settlement, according to their attorneys.
Swanson, 40, had posted a photo in the dental chair before the procedure, writing on social media, “Yesterday, new car. Today, implant! Fun never stops.” His mother, Brenda Swanson, described him as excited for the appointment and shared that he had been fixing many of his teeth.
According to the wrongful death lawsuit filed against Dr. Derek Lamb and Scottsdale Facial and Oral Surgery, Swanson suffered a lack of oxygen during anesthesia, resulting in a fatal brain injury. Brenda Swanson recounted that after the procedure, Derek did not return to the lobby as expected. She later learned an ambulance had arrived, and he was taken to the hospital nearby. He was taken off life support a week later.
The Maricopa County Medical Examiner concluded that Swanson’s death was caused by anesthesia complications. Attorneys for the family stated that Dr. Lamb failed to properly manage anesthesia, including not considering risk factors such as Swanson reportedly using cannabis the morning of the procedure, which can increase the risk of airway complications.
The Arizona State Board of Dental Examiners found multiple deviations from standard care, labeling Dr. Lamb’s conduct unprofessional. He was ordered to complete 12 hours of dental education and had his anesthesia permit suspended for three months.
Swanson’s family confirmed that a settlement was reached with Dr. Lamb and his dental practice. Lawyers representing the family stated, “We can confirm that the case has settled and is now dismissed. We are not at liberty to comment further on that matter.”
Dr. Lamb and Scottsdale Facial and Oral Surgery did not respond to requests for comment.
