Baltimore is gearing up for a wild mix of weather. The National Weather Service in Baltimore MD/Washington DC reports that a warm front will lift temperatures before a powerful cold front drops them sharply, bringing mountain snow showers and strong winds. Today’s highs will reach the mid-60s to low-70s, but early in the week, temperatures will plunge into the upper 20s and mid-40s.
Mid-level clouds are already moving in, signaling approaching showers. Southern Maryland might even hear a few early-morning rumbles of thunder—a rarity for this time of year. As the afternoon unfolds under mostly cloudy skies, another wave of showers is expected ahead of the advancing cold front. While severe weather remains unlikely due to limited instability, an isolated strong storm could still form. Rain may linger east of U.S. 15 into the evening once the front passes.
The incoming cold is no minor event. The Alleghenies could see one to three additional inches of snow Monday into Monday night. Brisk winds will make it feel even colder, with wind chills expected to dip into the teens. In anticipation, freeze watches are in effect across parts of Maryland and Virginia, especially in higher elevations.
Conditions over the water will also deteriorate. Gale Watches are posted for Monday night through Tuesday as strong winds whip across the Potomac and southern Chesapeake Bay. Boaters should expect rough seas and possible disruptions. Inland, dry air and gusty westerly winds could heighten fire weather concerns as vegetation dries out from earlier rainfall, prompting extra caution.
As the front moves away, coastal flooding concerns begin to fade. Areas like Annapolis and Straits Point could near action stage during high tide, but northerly winds should help keep water levels in check. This rapid change marks another reminder of Maryland’s famously unpredictable weather, as Baltimoreans brace for the swift turn from warmth to winter chill.
