A Bettendorf man faces multiple charges after Davenport Police say he drove a U-Haul recklessly with a person hanging onto the sidestep.
According to court records, Davenport Police responded to People’s Mini Storage, 575 E. 53rd Street, on August 18 for a damage complaint involving a U-Haul that struck several fixtures and caught fire. The driver, identified as William Brandle, 38, allegedly sped through a private lot with a person clinging to the front driver’s sidestep, showing no regard for his or the passenger’s safety.
Brandle reportedly hit a guard rail and a pole in the parking lot, causing about $2,500 in damage, and lacked proof of financial liability insurance for the vehicle. He fled before officers arrived. Witnesses told police Brandle shouted that “he didn’t care” about his driving and was doing it on purpose.
A warrant was issued for Brandle on August 22. He was arrested on September 22 and charged with second-degree criminal mischief, leaving the scene of an accident, financial liability violation, and reckless driving. He is being held in the Scott County Jail and is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on October 2.
