ISLAMORADA, Fla. — Drivers from Massachusetts, particularly Boston, have long carried an unflattering reputation. A 29-year-old man from Boston appeared to live up to it while driving through the Florida Keys on Tuesday morning.
According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, the man flipped off a deputy while speeding through a school zone in a U-Haul box truck on U.S. 1 and then refused to pull over.
Idibek Jalilov, identified in jail records as an Army reservist, now faces a felony charge for fleeing and eluding.
MCSO spokesperson Adam Linhardt said Jalilov “displayed his middle finger” as he drove past deputies in a school zone at mile marker 90, near Plantation Key School and Coral Shores High School in Islamorada, just after 7 a.m. Tuesday.
He was later seen impeding traffic, following too closely, and speeding, among other violations, Linhardt said. Jalilov did not stop for deputies who activated their lights and sirens until he reached mile marker 85.
Linhardt added that the Florida Highway Patrol assisted in the stop, and deputies took Jalilov to the Plantation Key jail facility.
Jail records did not list a bond or an arraignment date.
