A Miami-Dade woman suffered a double blow this week when a car crashed into her Westchester home Monday evening — and while she was forced to leave, burglars ransacked her damaged house the next day.
Deputies with the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office responded to the home on SW 34th Street Tuesday morning after reports of a burglary. So far, investigators have not identified any suspects.
Car Slams Into Home
Surveillance footage from a neighbor’s camera captured a dark-colored sedan speeding through a stop sign around 5 p.m. Monday before plowing into Flora Pazos’s home. The crash caused significant damage, shattering glass, breaking concrete, and flooding the house when the plumbing burst.
“I just came out of the bathroom, and all of a sudden, I heard an explosion from the roof,” Pazos said. “The car was right there. My body was shaking. The whole house filled with smoke and smelled like burned materials.”
Authorities said the car was driven by a juvenile girl, who was taken to HCA Florida Kendall Hospital in stable condition. She may face civil penalties.
Neighbors Describe Chaos
Nearby residents said the impact sounded like an explosion.
“It sounded like a transformer bursting,” recalled neighbor Sandy Ballart. “We were just happy to see the driver was alive, but she was screaming in pain.”
Another witness added, “The car went straight through the stop sign and into the residence. The boom was so loud, it shook the whole block.”
Burglary Follows the Crash
Pazos’s son said his mother left the home Monday night after electricity was cut due to the damage. When she returned the next day, she discovered burglars had broken in and ransacked the property.
Ballart expressed shock at the follow-up crime, saying, “This doesn’t happen in this neighborhood. This is a really good neighborhood.”
Homeowner Faces Another Setback
Adding to the heartbreak, Pazos’s son revealed that his mother does not have insurance to cover the extensive damage caused by the crash and burglary.
Authorities continue to investigate both incidents — the crash involving the underage driver and the burglary that occurred just hours later.
