Chicago Doctor and Avid Cyclist in Coma After Hit-and-Run Near Illinois Medical District

CHICAGO (WLS) — A beloved Chicago doctor remains in a coma more than a week after a devastating hit-and-run crash near the Illinois Medical District left him with a severe brain injury.

Ray Lee, a physiatrist specializing in spinal cord injuries and an avid cyclist, was struck by a red 2010 Ford Fusion sedan at Damen and Van Buren around 4:30 p.m. on October 29, according to the Chicago Police Department. The car, police said, had an Illinois license plate number BN 64959.

“He was biking home from work and was struck by a vehicle. It was a hit-and-run,” said his wife, Fani Lee. “He was somewhat conscious at the scene, but he’s been in a coma since then.”

Fani, an occupational therapist, said cycling became Ray’s daily commute and passion during the COVID-19 pandemic. “It was a good stress release for him,” she said. “He quickly became part of the biking community in Chicago. He loves it.”

Now, the man who has spent his career helping patients recover from life-changing injuries is fighting for his own recovery.

“He’s just the nicest, sweetest guy,” Fani said. “Everybody loves Ray — we always say that, like the TV show.”

Doctors say the healing process could take months or even years. “The brain does heal, but it takes a very long time,” she explained. “We’re hoping for a full recovery.”

Ray’s helmet cracked during the crash, a detail Fani believes saved his life. “He likely wouldn’t have survived without it,” she said.

The Lees, who share two children, have been overwhelmed by community support. Fani expressed her gratitude to the hospital staff and everyone who has reached out, urging drivers to be more alert and mindful of cyclists.

Chicago police are asking anyone with information about the red Ford Fusion involved in the crash to come forward.
