A 5-year-old boy and a 32-year-old man were killed Saturday afternoon in a single-vehicle crash near Steward, Illinois, authorities said.
The Lee County Sheriff’s Office reported deputies were called shortly before 12:40 p.m. to the southbound lanes of Interstate 39 near Milepost 92. The crash involved a white Ford heavy-duty pickup truck towing a white Cherokee horse trailer, which struck a tree.
Four people were inside the vehicle. The two rear passengers — the child and the 32-year-old man — died from their injuries. The driver, 25, and a 47-year-old front-seat passenger were hospitalized.
Several horses were also involved in the crash, though their conditions have not been confirmed.
The crash remains under investigation.
