Much of Middle Tennessee will be under a Cold Weather Advisory starting Sunday, with wind chills forecast to drop to roughly 1 degree below zero, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Nashville.
The alert covers a large area, including Nashville, Clarksville, Franklin, Gallatin, Murfreesboro, Columbia, Cookeville, Crossville, Shelbyville, Lawrenceburg, and dozens of other places. The notice is in force from midnight Saturday night to noon Sunday, when Arctic air sweeps into the state and winds increase slightly.
According to NWS forecasters, the combination of chilly temperatures and stiff winds may cause hypothermia with prolonged exposure. While the cold spell is not predicted to linger long, experts warn that the coldest and most hazardous conditions will occur in the early morning hours, just before daybreak on Sunday.
Residents are encouraged to dress in layers, cover their hands and heads, and spend as little time outside as possible. Travelers starting early Sunday should be prepared for harsh cold weather, whether warming up their automobiles or walking to transit stops.
