MDSO: Coral Springs teens used ‘stain’ distraction in Miami-Dade Target carjacking

Two Coral Springs teenagers have been identified in a carjacking that took place Wednesday afternoon at a Target in southwest Miami-Dade.

The incident happened around 1:45 p.m. after a woman parked her vehicle at the Target at 7795 SW 40th St. on Bird Road and went inside the store.

Deputies with the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office said 17-year-old Zacharias Allen approached the woman inside the store and claimed he “had a stain on his shirt,” asking her to take a photo of it. While she was distracted, investigators said 16-year-old Ahmaree Thornton came up behind her and forcibly pulled her car keys from her front pocket.

Deputies said Thornton immediately ran outside, got into the victim’s vehicle and locked the doors. The woman stood behind her car to block him from leaving, but Thornton allegedly reversed the car, nearly hitting her, then drove toward her before she moved aside. He stopped long enough for Allen to get into the passenger seat before driving off.

MDSO air support tracked the vehicle near the 16000 block of Northwest Seventh Avenue by the Golden Glades Interchange in Miami Gardens, where both teens bailed out and were arrested.

Deputies took the suspects to the MDSO Northside District station. After being read their Miranda rights, both teens provided statements and were later transported to the Juvenile Assessment Center.

Jail records show Allen and Thornton each face one count of robbery with carjacking. Thornton also faces an additional charge of attempted aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
