Court sentences Clinton woman arrested for delivery of fentanyl after man dies

UPDATE: A Clinton woman accused of involuntary manslaughter in a fatal drug overdose case has been sentenced to prison, according to Clinton County Court records.

On Nov. 13, Camren Cady appeared in court with her attorney. She had previously entered guilty pleas to a controlled substance violation and involuntary manslaughter, court documents show.

According to the sentencing order, the court determined that the punishment “will provide the maximum opportunity for rehabilitation of (Cady) and will provide the maximum protection of the community from further offenses by (Cady). This sentence also provides for specific and general deterrence.”

For the controlled substance charge, Cady received a prison term not to exceed 10 years. For the involuntary manslaughter charge, she was sentenced to a term not to exceed five years. The sentences will run concurrently, meaning at the same time. She also received credit for time already served.

The order notes that her incarceration “may be reduced from the maximum sentence because of statutory earned time, work credits and program credits,” and she “may be eligible for parole before the sentence is discharged.”

EARLIER: Cady was arrested after police said she sold drugs to someone who later died. Officers began investigating the death of 19-year-old Keaton Merle Olson on Feb. 28, 2024. According to the criminal complaint, the Carroll County (Illinois) 911 Center received a call the night before, around 10:42 p.m., about an unresponsive person in the 5000 block of Route 84 in Thomson.

EMS attempted lifesaving measures and transported Olson to Mercy One Emergency Department in Clinton, where he was pronounced dead just over an hour later.

Investigators reviewed Olson’s messaging records, which included several exchanges between Olson and Cady. The messages showed that Cady delivered controlled substances to Olson in exchange for money earlier that day. Olson’s father told investigators he had driven his son to Clinton for a brief meeting, later confirmed to be with Cady.

Pills found at the scene tested positive for fentanyl. An autopsy listed the cause of death as acute mixed drug intoxication involving cocaine and fentanyl.

After a lengthy investigation, officers obtained an arrest warrant for Cady on a charge of delivering fentanyl less than 5 grams, a Class C felony. Clinton Police arrested her on Sept. 18, 2024, without incident. She was held in the Clinton County Jail on a $50,000 cash-only bond and had a preliminary hearing set for Sept. 27.

Under Iowa Code 124.401(1)(g), Delivery of Fentanyl Causing Death, a person who causes another’s death while violating this subsection faces a sentence three times the length otherwise imposed by law. A Class C felony carries up to 10 years in prison and a fine ranging from $1,370 to $13,660.

The Blackhawk Area Task Force, the Carroll County (Illinois) Sheriff’s Department, and the Clinton County Attorney’s Office assisted in the investigation.
