Charles Raby, 46, formerly of the 200 block of Moore Street in Crothersville, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to attempted robbery, Scott County Prosecutor Chris Owens announced.
Raby was charged in Scott Circuit Court on February 26, 2024, with robbery resulting in bodily injury, battery with bodily injury, three counts of battery on a police officer, two counts of intimidation, resisting law enforcement, and driving under the influence.
On June 5, 2024, he pleaded guilty to robbery resulting in bodily injury in exchange for the remaining charges being dismissed.
According to court documents, Raby had been drinking heavily throughout February 26, 2024. He threatened customers at a Scottsburg Domino’s Pizza and later assaulted a guest at the Mariann Travel Inn after the man refused to give him money. Raby punched the victim in the mouth and head before fleeing.
Raby’s black Pontiac Vibe later crashed off Highway 56 near Slab Road east of Scottsburg. Investigators say the wreck happened after Raby grabbed the steering wheel from his wife, steering the car toward oncoming traffic. She managed to avoid another vehicle but ended up running off the road into the mud.
When officers ordered Raby out of the car, he resisted arrest, fought with police, and continued to struggle even after being handcuffed. He was taken to Norton Scott Hospital for evaluation, where he continued threatening police, EMS, and hospital staff.
Court documents note Raby “urinated on himself and the floor, screaming, yelling and cussing for several more hours” before being booked into the Scott County Jail.
“Violent crimes like this will not be tolerated in our community, and the Scott County Prosecutor’s Office will fight to see that people who commit these types of crimes be removed from our streets and get the sentence that fits the crime,” Owens said. “I hope that during the decade Mr. Raby spends in prison, he thinks about where he erred and betters himself so that he can return to society as a law-abiding member.”
