Officials Confirm Two Tornadoes in South Mississippi; Damage Reported Across Multiple Cities

SOUTH MISSISSIPPI (WLOX) — Officials are reporting widespread damage after two tornadoes touched down across parts of South Mississippi on Sunday.

In Gautier, crews are responding to heavy damage at Glenmark Apartments, Riverbend Condominiums, and Aztecas Restaurant & Cantina. Fewer than 10 homes were affected, according to city officials.

Mayor Casey Vaughan said the Jackson County Emergency Operations Center (EEOC) is coordinating recovery efforts with Singing River Electric, H2O, Gautier Police and Fire Departments, and Parks and Recreation to complete a full citywide damage assessment.

The city is also working with the American Red Cross to assist displaced residents at Riverbend Condominiums. While officials determined the damage did not warrant opening a shelter, the Red Cross is encouraging affected residents to reach out for support.

Following the storm, Aztecas Restaurant & Cantina released a statement thanking the community for its concern:

“Thank you to everyone who reached out with concern and support about the damage at Aztecas Gautier. We’re grateful to share that no one was injured. All of our team members are safe. The damage was only material, and we’ll keep you updated as we work through it.”

Mayor Vaughan confirmed that no injuries have been reported in Gautier.

In Pascagoula, emergency management officials reported tornado damage to several homes on Catalina Street and Arlington Road, where some houses suffered roof damage. No injuries have been reported there either.

As of 3:50 p.m., Singing River Electric reported 292 power outages in Jackson County.

The WLOX First Alert Weather Team said that while showers and isolated storms may persist into the evening, the threat for severe weather has ended.
