A Davenport man is in the Scott County Jail after police say he caused thousands of dollars in damage to a squad car and threatened an officer with a pocket knife.
According to a criminal complaint, Davenport police responded to the 2700 block of McKinley Avenue around 11:30 p.m. on September 21 for a disturbance.
The suspect, identified as 38-year-old Stanley Burnette, allegedly struck a fully marked police vehicle with its emergency lights on while trying to avoid arrest. He reportedly approached an officer with a pocket knife in his right hand and ignored repeated commands to drop the weapon.
Burnette is accused of causing about $7,500 in damage to police vehicles and $500 to property in the 300 block of Thornwood Avenue.
Police said Burnette showed signs of impairment, including bloodshot, watery eyes, the smell of alcohol, an unsteady stance, and slurred speech. He agreed to standard field sobriety tests — the Horizontal Gaze, Walk and Turn, and One Leg Stand — all of which indicated multiple signs of impairment.
Burnette was arrested and charged with two felony counts of assault on a police officer while displaying a weapon, felony second-degree criminal mischief, and misdemeanor counts of backing a vehicle on a highway and first-offense OWI.
He is being held at the Scott County Jail on a secured $16,900 bond and is awaiting a preliminary hearing.
