DAVENPORT, Iowa — A Davenport man is behind bars after allegedly leading Iowa State Patrol troopers on a motorcycle chase before trying to hide in Silver Creek early Wednesday morning.
According to a criminal complaint filed in Scott County Court, Trooper Cornwell spotted a dark-colored motorcycle heading west on 49th Street around 12:11 a.m. on October 30. When he activated his emergency lights, the rider continued westbound, reaching speeds over 50 mph in a 25 mph zone.
Trooper Pederson blocked the roadway with his fully marked SUV, but the driver — identified as 41-year-old David Strout — attempted to go around the patrol vehicle, lost control, and crashed into the grass. Strout then fled on foot, leaving his passenger behind.
Trooper Cornwell chased Strout into nearby brush, where Strout jumped into Silver Creek and tried to hide along the bank. Troopers set up a perimeter, and a Davenport K9 eventually found him. Officers discovered Strout’s driver’s license was barred and found a meth pipe (“meth bubble”) in his coat pocket. Strout claimed it belonged to his passenger.
At the Scott County Jail, Strout showed signs of impairment during field sobriety tests but blew a 0.000 BAC on a breath test. He refused to provide a urine sample.
Strout faces several charges, including felony eluding (speed over 25 mph) and misdemeanor counts of driving while barred, failure to maintain control, interference with official acts, OWI second offense, and possession of drug paraphernalia, along with other traffic offenses.
He remains in the Scott County Jail on a $7,000 secured bond pending his next court appearance.
