Davenport man sentenced to federal prison for possession of a firearm by a felon

A Davenport man has been sentenced to 18 months in federal prison for possessing a firearm as a convicted felon.

Public court documents and evidence presented at sentencing show that 23-year-old Rodolfo Tellez Gutierrez, Jr. threw a gun out of a vehicle window during a traffic stop. Investigators later reviewed Gutierrez’s phone and found messages between him and the person who purchased the recovered firearm.

After completing his prison term, Gutierrez must serve a three-year term of supervised release. Federal sentences do not include the option of parole.

United States Attorney David C. Waterman of the Southern District of Iowa announced the sentence. The Scott County Sheriff’s Office handled the investigation.

The case falls under Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program that unites federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies with the community to reduce violent crime and gun violence.
