Driver Arrested Months After Motorcycle Crash Killed 18-Year-Old in NW Miami-Dade

Authorities have arrested a man nearly three months after a motorcycle crash in northwest Miami-Dade resulted in the death of 18-year-old Angelina Plasencia.

24-year-old Ivan J. Leal Ayola was taken into custody Wednesday on a charge of vehicular homicide in a reckless manner, according to Miami-Dade jail records. The arrest stems from the Sept. 14 incident, during which Plasencia’s body was found in a canal following a series of crashes.

Miami-Dade detectives say the chain of events began with a crash involving two cars at Northwest 74th Avenue and Northwest 58th Street. One occupant left to check on the other driver while the remaining passengers fled the scene. Shortly after, the same vehicle was involved in a second crash on the northbound ramp of the Palmetto Expressway at Northwest 58th Street. The occupants abandoned the vehicle, fled on foot, and were later picked up by a friend riding a motorcycle.

Doral Police officers later spotted the motorcycle, which had a Florida tag not assigned to it, carrying Leal Ayola and three female passengers. When officers tried to stop the bike, Leal Ayola refused, ran a red light, and sped away. The motorcycle then crashed at Northwest 72nd Avenue and Northwest 58th Street, ejecting all four occupants.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue crews transported Leal Ayola and two of the female passengers in critical condition to a local hospital. Plasencia was launched into a nearby canal, and her body was not recovered until the following day. Her family had been actively searching for her and had posted missing person flyers on social media offering a $50,000 reward.

Leal Ayola was booked into jail and appeared in court Thursday, where his bond was set at $15,000. He was also ordered not to drive and to surrender his passport or any travel documents.
