A former top U.S. diplomat is raising serious concerns after President Donald Trump issued a late-night warning about possible military action against Iran.
Richard Haass, former president of the Council on Foreign Relations, reacted sharply Friday morning to Trump’s 3 a.m. Truth Social post, calling it “dangerous” and reckless. Haass appeared on MSNBC’s Morning Joe just hours after the message was posted.
Trump wrote that if Iran “shots (sic) and violently kills peaceful protesters,” the United States would “come to their rescue,” adding that the country was “locked and loaded and ready to go.”
Host Jonathan Lemire asked Haass to explain why the comments were so alarming.
Haass said unrest in Iran is significant, pointing to a collapsing economy, a devalued currency, and widespread protests. However, he warned that publicly promising U.S. military intervention could have deadly consequences.
He said such rhetoric could encourage more people to protest, believing the U.S. will protect them, only for those protesters to face violent crackdowns. Haass also questioned how military force could realistically protect millions of civilians in the streets.
Calling the remarks “empty and dangerous,” Haass criticized the idea of shaping foreign policy through impulsive social media posts.
“The president should put away his phone,” Haass said, stressing that this is not how foreign policy should be conducted.
