A former NYPD officer from Harriman faces federal charges after allegedly accepting tens of thousands of dollars in bribes and helping transport drugs while on duty.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, Andrew Nguyen, 41, was arrested Monday, Nov. 3, following a years-long investigation involving the FBI and NYPD Internal Affairs Bureau.
Prosecutors say that between 2020 and 2023, Nguyen accepted over $30,000 in bribes to assist a drug trafficking network. He allegedly transported cocaine while armed with his NYPD-issued firearm, conducted fake car stops, and accessed confidential police databases to share information with traffickers.
In one incident, Nguyen reportedly staged a fake drug seizure to help a trafficker avoid repaying a debt. He also allegedly discussed kidnapping or robbing rival dealers for cash. During a later sting operation, Nguyen was caught transporting what he believed were five kilograms of cocaine in exchange for $5,000 — drugs that turned out to be fake, supplied by undercover officers.
Nguyen was fired from the NYPD in December 2023 for unrelated misconduct. Federal officials said he later continued seeking work with the drug network even after his termination.
During his arrest, authorities found several firearms at his home, including two AR-15 rifles, a short-barreled rifle, a Glock handgun loaded with hollow-point ammunition, and high-capacity magazines.
Nguyen faces multiple felony counts, including narcotics distribution, bribery, honest services fraud, and firearms offenses, which carry potential life sentences. He appeared in Manhattan federal court on Tuesday afternoon.
