TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — A new bill filed Thursday aims to introduce a required subject in Florida classrooms highlighting Hispanic contributions to the U.S.
The legislation, SB 1472, was filed by Florida Sen. Mack Bernard (D-West Palm Beach). While state education standards already include some coverage, the bill specifies what students will learn at each grade level.
Under the proposed curricula:
Grades K-2

Hispanic American holidays, symbols, and traditions

Notable Hispanic Americans and their contributions

How Hispanic Americans fit into broader society

The importance of respect, fairness, and kindness
Grades 3-5

Spanish exploration of the New World
-
Hispanic leaders’ roles in defending the U.S.

Hispanic cultural influences in American life

Hispanic Americans excelling in arts, sciences, business, and education

Lessons on perseverance, courage, civic responsibility, fairness, and equality
Grades 6-8

Impact of Spanish colonization and Hispanic communities on U.S. growth

Effects of U.S. expansion on Hispanic populations

Hispanic contributions during key periods of history

Overcoming barriers to achieve equality and opportunity

Connections to liberty, equality, and democratic principles

How prejudice and stereotyping limit freedoms and the importance of recognizing rights

If approved, the bill is set to take effect on July 1.
