A Miami-Dade County mother is facing a child neglect charge after Florida City police said her children were living in a home filled with dog feces, trash and food containers.
Police said an officer responded Monday to a 911 call from the woman’s daughter, who reported that her mother was being attacked by her boyfriend. When the officer arrived, they made contact with the woman, identified as Amy Angela Alfonso, her three children and Edwin Rodriguez, who was arrested at the scene on a domestic battery charge.
Alfonso and Rodriguez share the youngest child, while the two older children belong to Alfonso. Inside the home, the officer reported a strong odor of dog feces and saw feces on the living room floor.
The officer spoke with the 8- and 10-year-old children in their shared bedroom and noticed the floor was covered with trash, clothes, toys and food containers. Other items covered most of the room, creating what police described as hazardous and unsanitary conditions.
Police also learned that the two older children had not attended school in more than a year.
Based on the dog feces, the strong odor, the cluttered and unsafe bedroom, and the extended school absence, police arrested Alfonso on a child neglect charge.
During the arrest, Alfonso began to vomit and appeared to have a panic attack, officers said. She was taken to Homestead Hospital and later transported to Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.
