A Florida couple has been arrested in Pennsylvania in connection with a multi-state credit card fraud scheme affecting victims from Alabama to Massachusetts. Authorities identified the suspects as Olivia Jean Baptiste, 24, of West Park, and Michael Rampal, 29, of Fort Lauderdale.
According to reports, the pair used phone spoofing to impersonate bank employees, deceiving victims into revealing personal banking information. In South Jersey alone, investigators identified at least 14 victims, with more than $20,000 stolen, and authorities expect the total to rise as the investigation continues.
Detective Sgt. Nicholas Pasculli noted the scam involved prolonged phone calls, sometimes lasting two to three hours, during which the suspects manipulated victims into disclosing sensitive information, including debit card PINs. The couple then used the stolen funds to purchase high-value items and gift cards.
Police apprehended Baptiste and Rampal in a rented car near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Inside, officers recovered a large sum of cash, 68 gift cards, 11 cell phones, and a laptop. Surveillance footage also linked the pair to various retail locations, including Dollar Tree and Best Buy.
The couple now faces charges of credit card fraud, theft, and conspiracy, and is awaiting extradition to New Jersey. Authorities advise residents to remain vigilant, verify account information directly with their banks, and avoid providing personal details over the phone.
Franklin Township Police and Newfield National Bank have increased security measures and issued warnings to prevent further fraud. Detective Pasculli emphasized: “Hang up, go to your local branch, and verify that the information you’re being told over the phone is accurate without giving out personal information.”
