Florida – A sharp chill is sweeping across North Florida and South Georgia as the region prepares for its coldest morning of the season. By sunrise Friday, temperatures could drop to 29°F in several inland spots, prompting the first widespread Freeze Warning of the fall-to-winter transition.
The National Weather Service in Jacksonville says the Freeze Warning includes Suwannee, Baker, Nassau, Bradford, Union, Gilchrist, and Alachua counties in Florida, along with parts of Coffee, Appling, Wayne, and Pierce counties in Georgia. The advisory will be in effect from 3 a.m. to 9 a.m. Friday.
Residents are encouraged to protect sensitive plants, secure outdoor pets, and check on elderly neighbors or anyone without reliable heat. Homeowners should also cover exposed pipes and disconnect outdoor hoses as sub-freezing temperatures settle in under clear, calm skies.
Cold air continues pushing south from a deep trough over the eastern U.S., part of a broader December cold snap stretching from the Great Lakes to the Gulf Coast. Friday afternoon will remain chilly, with highs only in the upper 50s to near 60°F before another cold night sets in.
Looking ahead, temperatures will ease slightly over the weekend, with lows rising into the upper 30s and 40s. However, forecasters warn that another early-December frost could return by midweek as the cold pattern persists.
