A Florida man who admitted to trying to kill his wife just days after she filed for divorce has been sentenced to nearly two decades in prison.
George Hachey, 75, entered a no-contest plea on Dec. 16, 2025, to attempted murder in the brutal stabbing of his wife, 71-year-old Margery Greene. The attack happened on Sept. 28, 2022, at their home in The Villages, Florida, according to court records reviewed by Law&Crime.
Greene was able to call 911 at around 7:40 a.m., telling dispatchers she had been stabbed and believed her husband had also tried to hurt himself. When deputies with the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office arrived, they found Greene lying on the bedroom floor suffering from multiple stab wounds to her legs, abdomen and chest. She pleaded with a deputy, “Don’t let me die.”
Hachey was found in the living room, seated in a recliner with a pocketknife in his lap. Authorities said he was covered in blood, unresponsive but still breathing. Both were transported to the hospital for treatment.
According to deputies, Greene later told investigators that during the attack Hachey said to her, “You’ve ruined my life, and now I’m going to end yours.”
At the hospital, Hachey reportedly admitted to a detective, saying, “I just tried killing my wife. I don’t want help, I want to die.” Investigators noted the stabbing was followed by a failed suicide attempt.
Hachey was sentenced the same day he entered his plea to 18 years in prison, with credit for time already served. Records from the Florida Department of Corrections show he is now in custody and is scheduled for release in September 2040.
