‘Stop Before You Kill Me’: Florida Man Tried to Kill Longtime Girlfriend With Baseball Bat After She Ignored His Calls, Police Say

A Florida man is in jail after allegedly beating his girlfriend nearly to death with a baseball bat while she begged him to stop, law enforcement said.

Jamie Michael Lane, 51, faces one count of attempted felony murder, according to Miami-Dade County court records.

Police said the attack happened Tuesday at the Homestead home Lane shared with the victim. The two had lived together for four years and had been romantically involved for seven, according to an arrest report obtained by WPLG.

The victim told police she and Lane had argued repeatedly that day. She eventually ignored his phone calls, which allegedly prompted him to arrive at the residence angry. When she refused to let him in after several knocks, Lane allegedly kicked down the door and entered carrying a wooden baseball bat.

She said Lane struck her three times — on her forehead, the back of her head, and her left arm. “Stop before you kill me,” she recalled shouting.

According to the report, Lane stopped the attack, dropped to his knees, prayed, and asked for forgiveness before fleeing the scene. A witness corroborated her account, police said.

Paramedics took the victim to Baptist Health Homestead Hospital, where she was diagnosed with a left frontal hematoma and possible skull or facial fractures, investigators said.

Officers later obtained a search warrant for the home and found a broken wooden bat believed to have been used in the attack.

Lane turned himself in on Wednesday. He remains held without bond at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. Court records classify the case as domestic violence and show he is represented by a public defender.

A judge issued a stay-away order on Wednesday to prevent him from contacting the victim. Lane is scheduled for arraignment on Oct. 14.
