Florida unemployment climbs to highest level in four years

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) — Florida’s unemployment rate increased in November 2025, reaching its highest level in four years, according to newly released data from Florida Commerce. The report also shows a notable year-over-year rise in joblessness across North Central Florida.

In Alachua County, the unemployment rate reached 5.8%, up 1.8 percentage points from November 2024. Columbia County reported a 5.9% rate, an increase of 1.6 points over the same period last year. Marion County recorded a 6.3% unemployment rate, marking a two-point jump from November 2024.

Union and Dixie counties both posted unemployment rates of 6.6%, among the highest in the region. Gilchrist County reported a 5.4% rate.

Florida Commerce released the November data on Thursday, about a month later than usual. Officials noted that unemployment figures for October 2025 will not be published due to disruptions caused by the federal government shutdown. Data for December 2025 is expected to be released on Jan. 23.
