Former Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan has been ordered to report to prison while his corruption conviction appeals are pending, according to court records.
The 83-year-old was sentenced to seven and a half years in prison for bribery conspiracy and related corruption charges. He is required to report on Oct. 13.
Madigan’s attorneys argued that the jury received incorrect instructions on key legal standards, but a federal judge ruled Friday that he must begin serving his sentence while the appeal proceeds.
The judge had previously denied Madigan’s earlier request to remain free during the appeal process.
The former speaker has recently hired a legal team experienced in arguing before the U.S. Supreme Court to handle his ongoing case.
