MONTGOMERY – Glenn Schoonmaker, the longest-serving police chief in Montgomery town history, died on Friday, December 19. He was 88.
Schoonmaker served as police chief from 1981 to 1993 and dedicated more than 20 years of service to the town.
Town Supervisor Stephen Brescia said he “served with honor, distinction and a great deal of professionalism.” Brescia added that the chief “was widely respected in the law enforcement community.”
State Assemblyman Brian Maher, who previously served as town supervisor, said Schoonmaker leaves behind “a lasting legacy of leadership and commitment to public service.” He added, “His leadership and dedication set a strong example for those who followed in his footsteps, and his impact on the community will not be forgotten.”
During his career, Schoonmaker introduced the first DARE program at Valley Central High School and helped establish the Chester Police Academy.
A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, January 3, at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Montgomery.
