A Cold Weather Advisory is still in force for parts of southeast Georgia and the South Carolina Lowcountry from 10 p.m. Sunday to 10 a.m. Monday, when frigid air moves in, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Charleston.
Wind chills are expected to range from 11 to 20 degrees in Savannah, Pooler, Garden City, Richmond Hill, Statesboro, Claxton, Metter, Hinesville, Fort Stewart, Darien, Ludowici, Hilton Head Island, Beaufort, Edisto Beach, Colleton County, and Jasper County. While temperatures will not be as harsh as those further north, the Lowcountry and Coastal Empire remain vulnerable to hypothermia if exposed for an extended period of time.
The coldest time will occur early Monday morning, when winds pick up and temperatures drop to the 20s across much of the alert area. NWS authorities advise residents to dress warmly, cover exposed skin, and spend as little time outside as possible.
Emergency managers are also urging locals to check on elderly relatives, neighbors, and anybody living in homes with insufficient heating. Portable heaters should be handled carefully and kept away from combustible items, and generators or grills should never be used indoors owing to carbon monoxide concerns.
