Georgia Weather Alert: Dense Fog And Strong Storms Threaten Atlanta Through The Weekend

Headlights fade to gray just over the hood this morning as deep fog creeps over metro Atlanta. Moist air clings to streets, and visibility rapidly reduces, making for a perilous start for commuters before a more active weather trend comes.

According to the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, fog might decrease visibility to a quarter mile or less early today, particularly in low-lying and suburban locations. Conditions gradually improve in the late morning, but clouds remain in place. Showers begin later, with rain chances increasing into the night.

By Saturday, the situation had escalated. We anticipate rain and isolated thunderstorms in northern and central Georgia. Some storms may intensify, bringing heavy rains and high winds. Localized flooding is conceivable, particularly in metropolitan areas with poor drainage.

Drivers should be aware of the conditions on I-75, I-85, I-20, and I-285. Wet pavement, occasional ponding, and poor visibility may hinder travel in the afternoon and evening. If you’re planning a trip around the metro area this weekend, allow extra time.

Saturday night marks a shift. Rain slows, winds shift, and cooler air begins to flow in. By Sunday, the skies clear and temperatures drop dramatically. Highs fall into the high 40s, with lows in the upper 20s Sunday night.

The chilly blast increases concerns about frost and isolated freezing temperatures early next week. Any remaining wetness on untreated surfaces may freeze shortly after dark.

Meteorologists continue to monitor a larger national storm system that is causing severe weather across the Southeast. While Georgia avoided the worst, time remains important for safety.

Slow down in the fog this morning. Stay weather-aware throughout Saturday’s storms. Expect a colder, calmer ending to the weekend.
