A grieving mother is still waiting for justice two months after the death of activist Dwight Wells, the creator of “Bikes Up, Guns Down.”
Family members gathered on Wednesday to demand answers, asking why no one has been held accountable for Wells’ killing. His friends, relatives, and especially his mother, Mary Brown, held a rally to bring attention to the unsolved case.
“I’ll never lose hope when it comes to ‘Screamer’ Dwight Wells. I’ll never lose hope,” Brown said. “I’m going to be here until the end. I’m in it for the long haul.”
Wells, 40, was shot and killed on Oct. 10 in front of his restaurant, Winning and Won Turkey Legs in Liberty City. Surveillance video captured his final moments after the shooting.
Brown said people have been calling her with rumors about who may have killed her son, but she wants to hear the truth directly from police.
“The street is talking all kind of stuff,” she said. “He’s dead. The guy that killed your son. All kind of stuff you can hardly think running through your mind.”
Wells founded “Bikes Up, Guns Down,” an organization focused on helping young people turn away from violence and choose a more positive path.
Since her son didn’t get to finish that work, Brown says she will continue it on the 10th of every month outside his business until someone steps forward with information.
“As the mother, I’m saying you out there, you know something, and I know that you know something because when I know something, I’m going to tell something,” she said. “Why don’t you do the same thing for us? Dwight didn’t deserve this. Not this way anyway.”
Brown added that she’s grateful to police for checking on her and asking if she has learned anything new.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Miami police.
