PARAGON, Ind. (WXIN) — A 25-year-old mother from Spencer, Indiana, was killed in a freak accident Saturday when a deer struck by another vehicle was launched through her car’s windshield.
The Morgan County Sheriff’s Office said the crash happened on State Road 67 near Paragon. A northbound Pontiac hit the deer, sending it airborne into the southbound lane, where it smashed into a Chevy Blazer.
Cheyenne Sears, a passenger in the Blazer, was killed instantly, officials confirmed. The 55-year-old driver was airlifted to a hospital, and a juvenile passenger was taken to a children’s hospital. No one in the Pontiac was injured.
“There’s no way you can predict it, no way you can prevent it,” Sheriff Rich Myers told WXIN. “It’s just an unfortunate, tragic accident.”
Sears worked at Trilogy Health Services in Mooresville, where she started as a nurse and rose to Assistant Director of Health Services.
“She was the epitome of the nurse you’d want caring for your family,” a colleague said. “Her joy and positivity were infectious.”
Sears was also a new mother of twins, described by friends as “beyond excited” about motherhood.
A fundraiser to support her family has raised more than $53,000 since Sunday.
Trilogy Health Services released a statement mourning her loss, calling her “a beloved part of our community whose warmth and dedication touched the lives of many residents and families.”
Sheriff Myers reminded drivers to use caution during deer mating season, when animals move unpredictably.
“They’re so unpredictable this time of year,” Myers said. “Keep your bright lights on when possible, slow down, and always stay alert — a deer can jump into the road at any moment.”
